However, lethal control methods disrupt family dynamics, leaving territories vacant and inviting new coyotes to occupy the space. A more effective approach involves non-lethal coexistence strategies that prioritize humane, progressive policies. By incorporating One Health principles, which address the interconnected well-being of people, animals, and the environment, communities can create programs that emphasize public safety, environmental balance, and animal welfare as key objectives for harmonious coexistence.

Coyotes are dedicated parents, with both parents playing a critical role in raising and protecting their young. Stability within coyote families ensures proper nourishment, life skills development, and territorial defense, which supports pup survival and reduces human-coyote conflicts. Maintaining healthy coyote populations is essential for a balanced ecosystem.

A progressive shift toward non-lethal wildlife coexistence strategies is gaining momentum across Canada and the United States. Municipalities are collaborating with organizations like Coyote Watch Canada to implement compassionate, effective solutions. For instance, the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario, in partnership with Coyote Watch Canada, introduced one of Eastern Canada’s first Coyote Feeding By-Laws in 2019, serving as a model for other Ontario communities developing their own comprehensive Coexistence Canid Response Strategy Plan.

Coyote Watch Canada, as wildlife consultants and conflict resolution specialists, has partnered with numerous cities, including Toronto, Whitby, Guelph, and Mississauga, providing education, outreach, and support through programs like the Living With Coyotes initiative. This collaborative approach highlights the evolving mindset toward humane, non-lethal coexistence, ensuring public safety, animal welfare, and environmental balance.
